We moved to Phoenix in Jan 1956 when I was 15 months old and lived about one or two blocks East on N 7th and Indian School RD on the VA property. May '60 we moved to East Phoenix and I attended Tavan Elem through grade five.
I remember in 1960 learning to shoot firearms in the dessert north of Scottsdale at the old Dike (now the Scottsdale Air Port) and I also remember the main road to Flagstaff and points North went through Oak Creek Canyon and Sedona. The interstate in that part of the state was in the planning stages at that time.

Re: My memories of Arizona
Sun, February 17, 2008 - 1:59 PMIn the 70's before we moved to AZ, we used to stay at a well-kept single story motel that backed right up to the creek, not far from this ice cream shop. The owners had a beautiful Collie, I forgot her name but she'd always come for a visit and would seem to remember when we came back months later. That whole area near the 'Y' has become an outdoor shopping mall now.
Sedona seemed like sanctuary then, and there were so many places to hike or camp along Oak Creek. You can still find some peace on a weekday in the off season, but it's not quite the same.
I believe the medicine wheels at Rachael's Knoll have also been plowed under to make way for a golf course. :/ -

Re: My memories of Arizona
Sun, February 17, 2008 - 10:42 PMNear as i can figure, I'm 39 now and this was the late 70's so I was pretty young. I remember peaceful summers there and walks to an ice cream shop, I bet it was the same one you're referring to. My folks don't even recognize Sedona anymore to pinpoint where the old motel was.
Might still have some stuff on slides that'll give a clue where it was ....
Now you'd think you were driving through Scottsdale or something. Cheap made in Taiwan imports and over-priced tourist food. If you go again, do it on a weekday in the off-season, weekends are zoo. Often you simply cannot find any parking near the trailheads. Oak Creek Brewery has some good micro-beer and food, if you hit up the brewery itself on the west end of town, it's mostly locals, musicians, poets, etc.
