I will be traveling from Santa Monica, CA to Jacksonville, FL and Phoenix will be my first stop. What are some of the best and or funky free or inexpensive things to see or do in the Phoenix, AZ area? I'll be following hwy 10 so anything along the way that I should see I would love to hear about.
Also how cold does it get in January? I'll be there Jan 1st?

Wed, November 14, 2007 - 5:44 PMWell, my classes are not free, and from some viewpoints not cheap, but you could take a group Aerial Circus Arts class...it's fun and funky though ;-)

Re: What to do in the Phoenix area
Sat, December 15, 2007 - 11:50 PM...just to clarify--the exhibit is at the ARIZONA MUSEUM FOR YOUTH at 35 N. Robson in Mesa--NOT at the Mesa Arts Center.
The information about the exhibit is on the Mesa Arts Center website though

Re: What to do in the Phoenix area
Wed, December 26, 2007 - 1:55 PMSomething that's pretty funky is the 1st Friday walk in downtown phoenix, Here you will see many small galleries and artists that open up their tiny homes into their own art galleries, It is held every 1st Friday of the month at night in downtown Phoenix, around Roosevelt between Central and 7th Street. There's a small cafe which is the center of it all, geesh I don't know the new name but it used to be called "the paisley Violin" on Roosevelt and 3rd street.
Hmmm what else? 7th Avenue between Indian School and Camelback has somewhat of a funky scene, they try to do the same thing now every 1st Friday
You should also take time to check out South Scottsdale, around 5th Avenue and Scottsdale Road, you have to visit AZ88's but that's pricey but a fun martini/ food bar.
And Tempe on Mill Avenue on Friday and Saturday or anyday would be great. Many great college bars are to be had in that area and a few on University drive around Scottsdale road or AKA Rio Solado
