I'm heading over to Az. (from LA) for a week or so during Christmas.
Been reading up on the Cabeza Prieta Wilderness and it looks pretty great, as does the Muggins Mountains Preserve which is along the way.
Has anyone been to either place, or have any recommendations of side trips along the way? I think I will take the 10 to Ajo, and head down, but wondering if the 8 may be better.
OHV trails ++++

Re: Cabeza Prieta Wilderness
Thu, October 28, 2004 - 5:20 PMI would suggest 10 to 95 to 8.
On 95, you can turn off at Palm Canyon, which is the only place left in Arizona where native palms still grow. There's also the rest of Kofa NWR, which is one of my favorite places in AZ.
Cabeza Prieta is pretty inaccessible and you're supposed to have a pass to travel there (because of smuggling issues).
Always sounded interesting though. Have fun. -

Re: Cabeza Prieta Wilderness/Kofa
Mon, November 1, 2004 - 8:22 AMI'm leaning more towards Kofa, and the Muggins Mountains.
Cabeza sounds great, but it seems there is only the Devils Highway, and that may mean I would have to deal with people, so I may go back there in the summer, when there are fewer people.
Kofa really interests me, and I am going the 10 route too.
What are people smuggling out of Cabeza? Is it a border thing?
Thanks Colin.

Re: Cabeza Prieta Wilderness/Kofa
Mon, November 1, 2004 - 3:59 PMPeople and drugs. You get a good enough 4x4 and bounce it over the desert. Same problem at Organ Pipe. It's tearing up the desert there. The military or Arizona Nazis or whoever are building a wall at the border made of old tires, cars and fence materials to prevent this.

Kofa is amazing, and almost no people, even at Palm Canyon. I guess because there are no paved roads, and the dirt ones aren't in the best condition so the tourists are kept away. -

Re: Cabeza Prieta Wilderness/Kofa
Wed, February 2, 2005 - 2:07 PMI know this is not a timely post but I had a lovely hike in the muggins mountains a couple of years ago. There is nothing, nothing there and I was hiking up a canyon near the border of the park out of no where an owl flew over head and came back 3 more times on the hike to check me out. I am going to go to Organ pipe for the first time this friday and am very excited, arizona is so bueatiful. . .

Re: Cabeza Prieta Wilderness/Kofa
Wed, February 2, 2005 - 2:34 PMZeke, I did not get to Muggins on my last trip, but I was in KOFA.
(see post)
I highly recommend it. It is also very isolated and huge.
Yes, Arizona is pretty fantastic.
I still want to get to Muggins though, which is very close to Kofa.

Re: Cabeza Prieta Wilderness/Kofa
Wed, February 2, 2005 - 3:26 PMOrgan Pipe was a little too crowded for my taste. Also, the Border Patrol is everywhere in that area, not to mention the new wall of trash.

I'll probably be going to Kofa and Muggins in a few weeks once I quit my job. Big Bend is too crowded this time of year, and it's still too cold for the Sangre de Cristos (which I love), so Western Arizona is the best alternative at this point.
Enjoy yourself, though. -

Wed, February 2, 2005 - 3:27 PMI need to read my own replies first so that I don't continually repeat myself without reading my own replies and repeating myself.
