Planning a move to North Arizona

Hi, I am gradually planning a move to AZ.

I am looking to be within 5 to 40 miles of Sedona, if possible. Anyone from Cottonwood, or Jerone out there? Any other recommended spots, friendly but not too expensive?

My move will not be for 2 years I believe, but I want to be thorough and grounded about it, and would love to make contact with friendly people in that area who plan on sticking around for a while.

thanks,

Current Retreats
JUNE 20th, 21st and 22nd 2008
YOGA RETREAT with THE PEACH RETREAT
Instructor Joanna Carichner

My goal is to make each class a journey. We begin by creating safe, sacred space through intention, chanting and meditation. Then we share the experience of opening ourselves to prana and allow transformation to occur. We then close the journey and awaken into our lives, more free. Visit her site http://www.joannacarichner.com/
We will have an opening ceremony on Friday night to set our intentions and create sacred space. It would be great to have everyone there.

The summer is our main fruit season here at WSC although we have some kind of fruit available every month of the year. If the timing works we hope to have plenty of peaches so we are calling this THE PEACH RETREAT.

We have a small 18' above ground pool to cool off in and if needed indoor space for yoga. The sauna is available (some people like to do sweats this time of year) outdoor & indoor showers. We will also have areas with misters to take the heat off if needed.

Please bring a towel for the shower and another if you want to use the sauna. Bring your own tent, sleeping bags and flashlights for camping. There is limited indoor space If you want to rent a small dome for the weekend do it early, prices below in payment area.

We will provide 5 simple vegan meals. A dinner on Friday, breakfast, lunch & dinner Saturday and breakfast again on Sunday. If you arrive early or stay longer you are welcome to cook additional meals in our community kitchen. Look around the website it will answer most of your questions. If you have questions about WSC you can email info@windspiritcommuity.org Driving directions can be found here DIRECTIONS TO WIND SPIRIT
We are willing to use a Sliding scale on prices if needed, call or email Joanna -

My memories of Arizona

We moved to Phoenix in Jan 1956 when I was 15 months old and lived about one or two blocks East on N 7th and Indian School RD on the VA property. May '60 we moved to East Phoenix and I attended Tavan Elem through grade five.
I remember in 1960 learning to shoot firearms in the dessert north of Scottsdale at the old Dike (now the Scottsdale Air Port) and I also remember the main road to Flagstaff and points North went through Oak Creek Canyon and Sedona. The interstate in that part of the state was in the planning stages at that time.

The weather has been great (ok, it's alittle rainy today), but otherwise it's been perfect. I've been outside everyday, hiking, mountain biking, walking every day this week and I've got the spring fever!

Surely someone else around has got it too. Want to to go Fossil Springs? To Horton Creek? To the Tonto Narrows? There's tons of stuff to do outdoor, let's go!

I've generally got weekends free, so lets make some plans.

artist/astrologer visiting sedona, looking for family to connect with...

Dear beautiful Arizona family -
hello friends - my name is verdarluz and i'll be heading to the beautiful southwest, visiting from portland, on wed. mar 28th - i'll be attending a 5 day astrology conference called the Blast (www.theblastastrologyconference.com) that looks to be AMAZING! - i'll be bringing my astro/archetypal art and tree mandalas to the conference. I'm looking to meet up with family there in/around sedona who might be willing to house me for a few days - i would love to share my thai/shiatsu/reiki practice and astrological wisdom with friends in exchange for some shelter. I'm also doing serious documentary and art videos right now, some preparing for this year's burning man, one of which is tree-dancing, which i would absolutely love to do out in a magical red rock location. i realize that this may be short notice and a bit much to ask for a couple days to share, but am really hoping to meet some family, Burners and otherwise, who would like to engage all of these similar languages of contact dance, bodywork, shamanism, astrology, visionary art., music... I'm also interested in meeting those who explore the Tantric Arts. I will have copies of my partner Tallulah Suliss' epic visionary erotic video entitled Divine Nectar...You can check out my profile and phtos on tribe and on my skeleton of a webpage at www.symbiart.net, my musical journeys at myspace.com/amritzaba- Tallulah's one of my friends and her website is tallulahsulis.com

I arrive on Wed. and will be at the conference from thrusday thru monday and may try to split a hotel with someone during that time, but if i can stay with someone that would be preferred. Then i was hoping to stay at least another week til about the 11th to meet people and explore/photograph the trails and mystical red rock.

Thank you all -

Motorcyclists Wanted

The weather is starting to warm up here and there. Time to pull the motorcycles out of the garage/shed/tarp or wherever you keep it, get it dusted off and tuned up.

This year I would love to get a group of people together for bi-weekly rides around Tucson Tombstone and beyond. Do not care if you are the occasional rider or the hard core 1%er. Ride a cruiser sports bike or dual purpose... again does not matter. As long as you can be respectful to those you are riding with it is all good.

So here is what I am proposing:

I would like to compile a list of interested bikers and get a mailing list going where we can discuss places to ride and arrange definitive times for it. I own my own server and can quickly pound together a system that would allow us to communicate freely and quickly so everyone can participate.

If you would be interested in something like this then please by all means contact me. We still have a couple of weeks of off and on good weather before we enter the really good weather weeks for the rides. This will be an excellent time to start planning.

You can contact me through here and I will provide further contact information.
Vince Herman of Leftover Salmon at MogBrew Tue 1/17!

Tuesday, January 17 at 8:00 PM
Mogollon Brewing Company (16 N. Agassiz, Flagstaff)
www.mogbrew.com (928) 773-8950

The legendary Vince Herman, front man of Leftover Salmon is on the road spreading his good time pickin’ and foot stompin’ sounds, accompanied by a couple of his favorite multi-talented musicians, Randy Crouch and Cliff Starbuck. Running through February 2006, the show is a surefire event for string band, bluegrass, new-grass, jam, folk and music lovers of all genres nationwide.

Randy Crouch, often referred to as the “World's Greatest Rock and Roll Fiddle Player”, is a ground breaker on the Red Dirt music scene. Best known for his incredible fiddle playing, Randy also plays guitar, pedal steel, piano, and a mean slide mandolin. As if his exceptional musicianship isn't enough, Randy is also a talented singer and gifted songwriter.

Cliff Starbuck, a founding member of Ekoostik Hookah, plays banjo, bass and guitar. Aside from performing with Hookah, he keeps company with New Orleans influenced R&B quartet “Chief Johnny Lonesome” and a country blues jug band called “Starbuck, Chern and the Trillionaires”.

The Vince Herman Trio combines Cajun Americana with a hysterical mix of improvised lyrics and original tunes. Their lively performances are sure to evoke energy, laughter, merriment and spirit at every stop along the way.

Vince, Randy and Cliff have all performed with the country's most renowned musicians, and this run of inspired jams will be the winter touring highlight!

Don’t forget to join www.leftoversalmon.tribe.net and www.tribes.tribe.net/vince and to check www.vinceherman.com for the most current information!

Crown King--Lobster on top of a mountain

So I went and helped my friend fix up his "cabin" in Crown King. There is only a dirt road to go there, get off on Bloody Basin Road on I-17 going north to Flagstaff. You pass this cute little town called Cleter, just a ramshackle jumbo of wooden shacks and up a riveted dirt path, so small in parts only one vehichle can pass at one time. As soon as you go over the ridge, there are pine trees, Many Pine trees. Anyway it's so dusty and dirty up there, didn't like it that much, and his cabin was an ugly green plywood construction on the ugliest plot of land I had ever seen.
But the restraunt was tops, called "The Mill". It was quite interesting inside with tons of artifiacts. I crack open the menu and find rack of lamb, Lobster, porter house steak, ribs. Needless to say I was shocked. Apparently an old hippie guy runs the place, Mind you this town has no running water, sewage or trash collection. Well it was great even though we had to wait an hour for food. (It was the busiest time of the week)

Hi everyone
My family and I are traveling from bc canada, and going to the quartzite and tuscon rock shows. We were wondering about close places to harvest white sage as we love this plant soo much and would love to see it in its natural enviroment.
thanks hjeron

allow me for a moment to hop up on this here soap box an preach to ya'll canine owners for a spell.
when you walk your dog(s) in lets say May, June, July, Aug, Sept in arizona, how come you dont walk them in your bare feet?

um yeah...the pavement can reach temps of 100 to 120 and blacktop is even hotter.
just from my own experience; a petsitter took my dog out for a run one summer. my dogs paws (bloody, raw, burned, pink) took several weeks to heal and he was in a lot of pain.
another example-a friend was in an auto accident in which her vehicle rolled and the scared dog jumped out of the window, in summer, out onto the blacktop. this dog had to have all paws bandaged for months as well as be administered meds and antibiotics.

soooo, if i see you darling daytime dog walkers, i dont hesitate to inform you kindly "your dog's paws are burning."
if you ignore me or get irate with me about my kind advice, i happen to know of a certain sherriff joe and a posse who love to bust folks for animal cruelty. yes, i am that much of an animal rights person that i will make that call.
please consider how hot the pavment is for them. yes, they have pads but so do we. so try it barefoot sometime. i dare ya.

Lake Powell Advice

Hello.. I am taking a boating trip to Lake Powell in a week and have done quite a bit of research and planning. There are nearly 100 canyons and several things to see in each canyon... quite overwhelming!

I would love to get some tips on great spots or canyons to see. We'd probably want to avoid the super busy places like Rainbow Arch, but aside from that we are looking for fun areas to hike, beach bum, camp and explore. We depart from Wahweap so western areas are easier for us to get to.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

hello fellow tribe members,

I am looking to plan a visit to Sedona in either September or October 2006 and hoping to find a reasonable place to stay ( $50 a night ) that's in the heart of the city. My intention is to make this a spiritual journey, to totally connect with the land and venture to the most soulful and beautiful places. Does anyone have any suggestions and is fall a good time to visit the desert ?

Thanks so much,

Myself and a friend will soon be flying into Phoenix, renting a car and journeying to Sedona. We will be there for a short 4-5 days and wish to live simply on the earth there. Cooking over fire, tenting, meditating, bathing, etc. Last time I pilgrimaged there was 8 years ago and I believe many things have changed. I parked my car on Schnebly (sp?) Hill road and camped...is this still realistic?

Thank you for your help and guidance.

I have been before, but I do not have a lot of money so I can't afford the Jeep tours or stuff like that this time. I was planning on hiking and going to see Montezuma's Castle and Slide Rock, but I was wondering if anyone had any other suggestions of things to do for cheap when we get there. ANY help would be wonderful.

There are areas throughout this country where time has seemingly stood still. Areas that have not had a human footprint in the sand for years. But yet there are stories to be told. The stories are written in stone left by the old ones that traveled before us. Stories that are told by the artifacts and treasures left behind, at old indian camps, caves, mining camps, ghost towns and petroglyphs. Stories from the treasures left behind in old mining camps and ghost towns. Each new discovery is as exciting as the first. Come join me on my journey.

Hola!
I'm a twenty year old guy from Tucson, and because no one in my family and none of my friends are really into hiking, and I don't like to go alone; I'm searching for another person, or group of persons who would be interesting in getting together for hikes and or camping trips.

I know quite a few decent trails around the Tucson area, and I can provide transport and some equipment if its needed. Any body is welcome, other guys, girls, couples, what ever. This area is so beautiful and would love to have someone to share the experience with! Reply to this post or send me an email: euphoricdayz@yahoo.com.

I look forward to getting some kind of response!
Much <3,

I love camping and hiking and about anything in nature. Please come share Arizona with us cause I know it is one of the most beautiful states and we need it represented for when we come to your area and maybe we can help you when you come to ours.

Has anyone here hiked sections of the Arizona Trail? My hubby (Chris) wants to do a 3 day solo hike (somewhere in northern az) and he is considering the Az trail...maybe where it pics up in Prescott. He's going to head out next Tuesday (31st).

Other suggestions for a nice 3 day solo backpack trip are welcome too. Chris's ankle is bad...so the hiking needs to be easy to moderate.

Thanks,
Charlotte

I'm wondering how other Arizona lovers felt about the possibility of draining Lake Powell? My uncle worked there with the NPS ( he retired this last year) in maintenance. Some of the horror stories of what he found in that lake, ick.

I'm heading over to Az. (from LA) for a week or so during Christmas.
Been reading up on the Cabeza Prieta Wilderness and it looks pretty great, as does the Muggins Mountains Preserve which is along the way.
Has anyone been to either place, or have any recommendations of side trips along the way? I think I will take the 10 to Ajo, and head down, but wondering if the 8 may be better.

Back from KOFA

Well, KOFA was great.
It's between Yuma and Quartsite on 95.

I put some pics up on the site.

No paved roads in the refuge, or any facilities. Roads (trails) ranged from washboardy to downright horrible. Even in my Jeep, I had some tough spots. To see most of the refuge, 4wd is the only way.

Finding great places to camp was never a problem, and I always had spots to myself, and all had spectacular views. You are permitted to make fires this time of year at least, though I never did since it rained almost the whole time.

I saw few people, most were limited to better trails, and the more remote trails were totally empty.

Backcountry hiking is fantastic, rock climbing also great. And at this time of year, the place is so green, it's kind of incredible.

I would highly recommend KOFA.

Something I've been working on for a while. Finally just said "screw it" and put it online. I have NM and a bit of AZ (Cochise County) online now, and I'm working on the rest of AZ now.
This is for all of the restless travelers, seeking refuge in the arid reaches.
I'm looking for submissions and pictures. Your work will always be credited. You can either submit something for an area that is not already represented or you can submit something for one I had already written, but sucks.
You can either email me, --colin@lonelycrowdedwest.net or use the submission form: http://www.lonelycrowdedwest.net/form.html but you will still have to email pics for the time being.
Anyone is welcome to do this, I want to get a wide variety of opinions and stories.

Thanks,

I was exploring in my Jeep recently, on my way to the Roosevelt Dam, when I saw off to the south a magnificent rock formation. I have since come to learn that this is the world famous Weaver's Needle. Then I heard that you can hike to it. Is this true? If so, how do you get there?

roadtrip suggestions?

I have a couple of days in a row off next week, so I figured I would take a trip over to Yuma (from Tucson) via the res. Any suggestions on stuff to see on the way or in and around Yuma? I've only been to Yuma once but did not spend a whole lot of time there. I know they have the Imperial Dunes just west of town on I-8, and I'm definitely check those out (didn't get a chance last time). Any other ideas? I'd love to find a good place to check out the river.

Anyone been to Sedona? and do you believe in the power of the vortexes? I'm not sure I do but one night while I was camping near Bell Rock...I heard yelling but it was all around me but far away in the distance. Almost like Indians. WEIRD!
